You gave my family and I a sense of belonging, and for that I will always be thankful.

Two days after signing a two-year, $86 million contract with the New York Mets, future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander sent an emotional farewell to Houston on Wednesday night.

After spending 13 years in Detroit, Verlander, 39, spent 2017–22 with the Astros, making slightly over 100 starts throughout the regular season. It appears that Verlander still harbours sentimental feelings for Houston. In a social media message on Wednesday, he expressed gratitude to the city, saying that during the previous five years, Houston “made me and my family feel at home.

Verlander posted on Instagram, “To Houston: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being so positive, generous, and accepting.” “You helped my family and I feel at home, and I will always be appreciative of it. Together, we have experienced many incredible occasions since the trade in 2017.

“My family and I will always treasure our time spent in the [H] and the lifelong memories we made there!
