What grade does the first trade deadline move, hopefully the first of many, deserve?
The MLB trade deadline is approaching, and the New York Mets won’t be missing anything. In exchange for minor leaguer Rhylan Thomas, they acquired veteran reliever Ryne Stanek from the Seattle Mariners.
The Mets had targeted Stanek in the summer; however, he ultimately signed a one-year, $4 million contract with Seattle. A successful product of the Tampa Bay Rays in his youth, he would go on to perform well for a few seasons as a member of the Houston Astros. On his birthday, he joins the Mets with a 4.38 ERA through 39 innings pitched this season.

Even though these are not flashy figures, the cost matters when evaluating this trade. Thomas, who MLB Pipeline ranks as the 30th best prospect, was disposable and a movable piece of the farm system.
Regarding the Ryne Stanek trade, give the Mets a B+.
The Mets traded away a lifelong player.Minor League batter that hits 291/.363/.393 with 70 strikeouts and 69 walks. His best weapon is his great grasp of the strike zone and how to place the bat on the ball. With just 709 plate appearances, Thomas only managed 8 home runs. Power won’t appear out of nowhere and reach a whole new level.
