Sad One: South Carolina mourn the passing away of former coach at the age of 69

The South Carolina athletics community is mourning the loss of Kevin Long, a former Gamecocks running back and NFL player, who passed away on September 10, 2024, at the age of 69. Long was a standout athlete at the University of South Carolina and went on to have a successful professional football career.

A native of Clinton, South Carolina, Long played for the Gamecocks from 1973 to 1976. He made history in 1975 by becoming the first Gamecock to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, finishing with 1,133 yards. Over his college career, he accumulated 2,372 rushing yards, ranking him 10th on the school’s all-time list. Long was instrumental in leading the Gamecocks to a 7-5 record in 1975 and their third bowl game appearance in history, the Tangerine Bowl against Miami (Ohio).

Following his collegiate success, Long was selected by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL Draft. He played five seasons with the Jets, rushing for 2,190 yards and 25 touchdowns, and catching 74 passes for 539 yards and three touchdowns. After his NFL career, Long continued to play professionally in the United States Football League (USFL) from 1983 to 1985, with teams including the Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers, and Arizona Outlaws.

In recognition of his contributions to South Carolina athletics, Long was inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. He is remembered not only for his athletic achievements but also for his character and dedication to the sport.

Long is survived by his wife, Frankie, whom he met at USC, and their four children: Kevin, Latifah, Alisa, and Salia, along with six grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service was held at Easley First Baptist Church in Easley, South Carolina.

Kevin Long’s legacy as a trailblazer for the Gamecocks and his impact on both college and professional football will not be forgotten.
