The South Carolina Gamecocks have just landed a major addition to their women’s basketball roster, as Mississippi State transfer Madina Okot has officially committed to the program, sources confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
Okot, a rising star known for her dominant presence in the paint and elite shot-blocking ability, brings size, skill, and experience to a Gamecocks squad that continues to reload with top-tier talent. Standing 6-foot-5, Okot averaged 9.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game last season with the Bulldogs, earning SEC All-Defensive Team honors.
Her decision to join South Carolina comes after a highly competitive recruitment process, with several powerhouse programs expressing strong interest. Ultimately, Okot chose Dawn Staley’s nationally renowned program, citing a culture of excellence, player development, and championship pedigree.
“I’m beyond excited to be joining the Gamecock family,” Okot said in a statement. “Coach Staley has built something really special here, and I’m ready to work, grow, and contribute to that winning legacy.”
Sources close to the situation say that Staley was deeply involved in the recruitment process and sees Okot as a key piece to bolster the team’s frontcourt heading into the 2025–26 season. With the departure of several upperclassmen, Okot’s arrival provides an immediate boost in both defense and rebounding.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Madina to Columbia,” Coach Staley said. “She’s a competitor, a worker, and someone who fits our program’s values. Her best basketball is still ahead of her, and we can’t wait to see her thrive in garnet and black.”
With Okot’s commitment, South Carolina continues to solidify its position as one of the most dominant forces in women’s college basketball. The Gamecocks are expected to enter the new season with championship aspirations—and now, even more firepower in the post.
