Longtime Oklahoma Sooners softball coach Patty Gasso, one of the most successful and respected figures in college sports, is about to embark on a brand new chapter — this time, not on the diamond, but in her personal life. The Hall of Fame coach is set to welcome her first grandchild, a milestone that’s bringing joy and anticipation to the entire Gasso family.
For someone who has built a legacy of championships and has mentored countless young athletes over her three-decade career, Gasso is no stranger to milestones. She’s led the Sooners to multiple national titles, earned numerous Coach of the Year honors, and cultivated a program that’s become a powerhouse in NCAA softball. But the news of becoming a grandmother offers a different kind of excitement — and one she’s embracing wholeheartedly.
“I’ve been blessed in so many ways through this sport and my career, but this… this is something truly special,” Gasso shared recently. “It’s a new season of life, and I’m just beyond excited.”
The baby is expected later this year, and the family — including Gasso’s husband Jim, and their two sons, JT and DJ — is eagerly preparing for the arrival. JT Gasso, who is also on the OU coaching staff as an assistant, is reportedly the father-to-be, adding an extra layer of joy to the family’s strong ties to the program.
Balancing the demands of elite coaching with family life is something Gasso has long mastered, and she’s often spoken about the importance of faith and family in her journey. Those values now take center stage in a new way as she prepares for her new role as “Grandma Patty” — though it’s likely her future grandchild will come up with a more creative nickname.
While her focus remains on leading the Sooners through another competitive season, the glow of upcoming grandparenthood is unmistakable. Teammates, players, and fans alike have offered congratulations and shared in the excitement.
As Gasso leads her team with the same fiery passion and poise she’s always shown, she now carries with her the warm anticipation of holding her first grandchild — a reminder that even for champions, life has beautiful new innings to play.
