Mariano Rivera, the legendary former New York Yankees closer, and his wife Clara are facing serious allegations in a new lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed in the New York Supreme Court, accuses the Riveras of covering up the sexual abuse of a minor associated with their church, Refuge of Hope, in Westchester County, New York.
The complaint alleges that the abuse occurred during a 2018 summer internship at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida, which is affiliated with the Riveras’ church. The minor, referred to as Jane Doe, was allegedly abused by an older female camper, identified as MG.
The lawsuit claims that instead of taking action to stop the abuse, the Riveras isolated and intimidated Jane Doe to remain silent to protect the church’s reputation. The allegations extend to an incident at the Riveras’ home in Rye, New York, where Jane Doe was reportedly abused again by MG during a barbecue.
