Twins salvage doubleheader with split in Chicago
CHICAGO — These days, you can’t keep the Twins down for too long.
And after the Twins were mostly quieted in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the White Sox — and for the first five innings of the second game — they finally broke through in the sixth with two home runs.
From there, they were able to salvage the second game of the doubleheader, beating the White Sox 3-2 in Game 2 after falling 3-1 in the first game at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Twins, who won the first game of the series 8-6 on Monday, have now won six straight series.
“We didn’t get the job done the first game, but we were going to come through at some point,” shortstop Carlos Correa said of the two home runs. “The dugout was a little dead. That was the spark we needed.”
Byron Buxton was largely responsible for helping manufacture the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, turning on the jets on a softly hit ball to shallow right field and speeding into second base.
He scored on a Ryan Jeffers single, putting the Twins (53-40) on top for the first time all day.
“Even after watching him for the last six years from the dugout, he still amazes you when he turns it on,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “ … He was moving just so much faster than anything else going on out there on the field on that play. It catches you by surprise. You can’t miss it.”
