After a patched-together Oklahoma team’s poor performance in the Armed Forces Bowl, could Brent Venables be fired?
The Oklahoma Sooners are struggling, and Brent Venables’ seat is becoming more and more heated.
Venables led the Sooners to a disappointing 6-6 regular season in his third season as head coach of the Oklahoma football team, which included a 2-6 result in the program’s debut SEC season. Sooners fans are forced to watch their team play in the Armed Forces Bowl versus Navy, while rival Texas advanced to the SEC Championship game and is now in the second round of the College Football Playoff.
Given its significance and the prestige of facing Navy, it’s undeniably a unique bowl game, but let’s face it, that’s still not what people in Norman are used to.
After taking an early 14-0 lead, Venables’ Oklahoma squad faltered and let the Midshipmen score 21 points in a row. Hundreds of Oklahoma fans took aim at Venables in the midst of that letdown.
When it comes to the growing pressure on Venables and the Oklahoma football program, it seems like the floodgates have opened. Ben Arbuckle’s appointment as his offensive coordinator undoubtedly did not improve Sooner supporters’ perceptions of the program’s trajectory going into 2025. Furthermore, a plethora of transfers—among the highest in the nation—has harmed Oklahoma in any prospective offseason developments.
Venables feels as though he might be hanging on by a thread, but the Oklahoma administration has not given any indication that he will be let go. It’s uncertain how much more time they will give him because his three seasons in Norman have been anything but stellar.
Considering the high $44 million buyout, we don’t think Oklahoma will dismiss Venables this summer, but if things don’t improve, you have to think such discussions will take place in 2025.
If they wish to move on, is there a chance that both parties will benefit? We’re thinking of one. However, it would be reasonable to assume that Brent Venables will be the only head coach in Norman next season.
