ESPN REPORT: Dowell Loggains is departing from Gamecocks football to assume the head coaching position at App State.
South Carolina football is now on the hunt for a new offensive coordinator following the departure of Dowell Loggains, who has been named the next head coach of Appalachian State. The announcement was made Saturday afternoon, with Appalachian State’s Board of Trustees approving the hire during an emergency meeting. Loggains’ contract with the Mountaineers is a five-year deal, and he will be formally introduced as head coach on Monday at noon.
Expressing his excitement, Loggains said in a press release, “My family and I are thrilled to join the Mountaineer family and build on the rich championship tradition of App State Football. We’re eager to become part of the community, engage with the student-athletes and fans, and give our all for App State.”
The move comes just one week after Loggains helped South Carolina wrap up a successful 9-3 regular season with a victory over Clemson. The Gamecocks are currently ranked No. 14 in the College Football Playoff Top 25. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news on Saturday.
Loggains has been South Carolina’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons and brought over 15 years of NFL coaching experience to Shane Beamer’s staff. Prior to his tenure with the Gamecocks, he served as Arkansas’ tight ends coach for two years.
At South Carolina, Loggains earned $1 million annually, but his contract allows him to leave for a college head coaching position without owing a buyout. As the Gamecocks prepare to find his replacement, Loggains looks forward to leading Appalachian State’s storied football program into a new era.
