Breaking news: The Dolphins Have Benched Former Pro Bowler Despite Win Over Patriots…
Odell Beckham Jr., a free agent receiver, seemed like a strange fit for the Miami Dolphins when they signed him. Twelve weeks of football haven’t altered that viewpoint.
Beckham’s NFL glory days are long gone. It’s okay that his signing with the Dolphins still makes me feel like a Mike McDaniel fanboy. Nevertheless, with the season drawing to a close, McDaniel ought to give the idea of benching or perhaps not playing OBJ some serious thought.
The Dolphins have many offensive options, including Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Jonnu Smith, and De’Von Achane, who can all pass the ball. There should be no outlet for Beckham. His hands aren’t as good as they were, and he’s not very good at running routes.
The Dolphins’ massive thumping of the Patriots in Week 12 produced five winners.
The Dolphins should prioritize developing receivers over Odell Beckham Jr.
Including River Cracraft and Malik Washington in the strategy is Miami’s best bet. Both receivers are superior to Beckham and bring something unique to the Dolphins’ offense.
In the Dolphins’ victory over the New England Patriots, Beckham played more snaps than Cracraft but failed to catch any of the three targets.
Cracraft has established himself as Tua Tagovailoa’s go-to outlet receiver on third downs and is currently a far stronger route runner than Beckham. As a blocker, Cracraft also offers everything. Beckham is slower than Washington, a rookie who may use more playing time.
Julian Hill, a tight end, is another player the Dolphins need to cut.
On the field, nothing positive occurs with Hill. He is not a dependable pass-catcher and is only a mediocre blocker at best. Hill should not be the only player used by the Dolphins. It’s time to start planning for the remainder of the season, and they need dependable players if they want to be in a position to take charge of their own fate. That player is not Hill.
Beckham can’t be counted on to help this team win on the field, but he has the expertise to help them win in the closing games of the season. Other players are losing out on opportunities even though they are in a better position to contribute.
