The Boston Red Sox have made significant changes to their coaching staff following a series of disappointing losses to the Seattle Mariners, culminating in a narrow 4–3 defeat on April 24, 2025.
In response to the team’s underperformance, the Red Sox have parted ways with pitching coach Dave Bush, third base coach Carlos Febles, and first base coach Andy Fox, among others.
Dave Bush, who had served as the pitching coach since 2020, oversaw a pitching staff that posted a 4.52 ERA in the 2023 season, ranking 21st in Major League Baseball. Despite his tenure, the team’s pitching struggles persisted, leading to his dismissal.
Carlos Febles, a former major league infielder, joined the Red Sox organization in 2007 and became the third base coach in 2018. Under his guidance, the team committed 102 errors in the 2023 season, the second-most in MLB, highlighting issues in defensive execution.
Andy Fox, who had been with the organization for 14 years, served as the first base coach for the past three seasons. His departure is part of a broader restructuring aimed at revitalizing the team’s performance.
In addition to these firings, several other coaching staff members will not return for the 2025 season. Bullpen coach Kevin Walker, assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz, mental skills coach Rey Fuentes, bullpen catcher/coach Mani Martinez, and strength and conditioning coach Ben Chadwick are among those departing.
Despite these changes, key members of the coaching staff are expected to remain. Manager Alex Cora, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, pitching coach Andrew Bailey, hitting coach Pete Fatse, and third base coach Kyle Hudson are all anticipated to return. This continuity aims to provide stability as the team works to address its challenges and improve performance in the upcoming season.
The Red Sox’s decision to overhaul their coaching staff underscores the urgency to reverse the team’s fortunes. With a focus on strengthening both pitching and defense, the organization is committed to rebuilding and striving for greater success in the 2025 season.
