South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley has announced she will be stepping away briefly from her duties to attend to a scheduled medical checkup.
The announcement was made earlier this week through a statement released by the University of South Carolina Athletics Department. While Coach Staley emphasized that this is a routine appointment, her transparency comes as a reassurance to fans, players, and the broader Gamecocks community.
“I appreciate everyone’s concern, but this is just a check-in to make sure everything is good,” Staley said in the statement. “Health is important, and I always encourage my players to take care of their bodies and minds. I’m doing the same.”
Staley, who has led the South Carolina program to national prominence—including multiple Final Four appearances and national championships—has long been a respected figure both on and off the court. Known for her leadership, authenticity, and commitment to her players, she has always prioritized well-being, not just for her athletes, but also as a core part of her coaching philosophy.
Assistant coaches will oversee day-to-day operations while Staley is away, with no interruption expected to the team’s off-season training schedule. Associate Head Coach Lisa Boyer, Staley’s longtime right-hand, is expected to lead practices and handle media duties in her absence.
“We are fully confident in our coaching staff to maintain continuity while Coach Staley takes this brief pause,” said Athletic Director Ray Tanner. “She has built a culture of excellence, and that includes making health a priority.”
The timing of the announcement comes as the Gamecocks begin preparing for next season following their dominant 2024 NCAA Championship run. With recruiting season heating up and preparations underway for summer workouts, Staley’s leadership remains crucial. Still, her proactive approach to health has been met with overwhelming support.
Fans flooded social media with messages of encouragement, with many praising Staley for being open about her health and setting a positive example. “Coach Staley always leads by example,” one fan tweeted. “Wishing her nothing but good news and a speedy return.”
Though the coach did not provide a specific timeline for her return, she assured fans it will be a short trip. “I’ll be back soon, ready to keep building on what we’ve started,” Staley said.
Her brief absence is unlikely to slow the momentum of a program that continues to set the standard in women’s college basketball.
