Red Sox right-handed pitcher could miss the rest of the season

Club selects right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Worcester.

The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts on the 15-Day Injured List with a right pectoral strain. To fill his spot, the club selected right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. Fulmer will wear number 51.

The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40.

Fitts, 25, was removed from yesterday’s game against the Chicago White Sox after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings with two hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA (6 ER/17.0 IP) in three starts this season. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the sixth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Alabama native owns a 2.39 ERA (10 ER/37.2 IP) with 22 strikeouts in seven career Major League games, all starts for the Red Sox (2024-25).

Fulmer, 32, has recorded a 3.09 ERA (4 ER/11.2 IP) with 18 strikeouts in three games (two starts) for Worcester this season. The right-hander also pitched in five Grapefruit League games for Boston during 2025 Spring Training, posting a 0.79 ERA (1 ER/11.1 IP). Originally selected by the New York Mets in the first round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, the Oklahoma native owns a 3.94 ERA (295 ER/674.0 IP) in 262 Major League games (90 starts) with the Detroit Tigers (2016-22), Minnesota Twins (2022), and Chicago Cubs (2023). A 2017 American League All-Star and 2016 American League Rookie of the Year, Fulmer was signed by Boston as a minor league free agent on February 2, 2024. He underwent right elbow UCL revision surgery on October 18, 2023, and missed the entire 2024 season.
