Preston have been dealt a devastating injury blow ahead of facing Derby County.
The Rams host Preston at Pride Park in the Championship on Wednesday (7.45pm) and North End boss Paul Heckingbottom has confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman will be sidelined for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
Woodman suffered the injury ahead of Preston’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Premier League Aston Villa on Sunday, with Dai Cornell replacing him as Heckingbottom’s side lost 3-0.
It was only Cornell’s third appearance of the season and he now looks set to start against Derby as John Eustace’s side resume their battle to avoid relegation, having won three matches in a row before the international break.
Speaking about Woodman’s injury, Heckingbottom said: “He’s got a nasty ankle injury which he suffered in the gym in the international break. He’s going to be out for the season now which is a big blow for him and for us.
“But, it’s a great opportunity for Dai (Cornell). He’s been training like a demon all season, provided unbelievable support and has been great for us when he’s been called upon.
“He’ll have a good run now and it’s a great opportunity for Dai.”
Woodman’s absence is a huge blow for Preston, who were also missing Jack Whatmough, Ali McCann and Brad Potts against Villa with injuries.
