COLUMN: The new kid on the block and Wigan Warriors’ drive to bounce back from Challenge Cup upset…

The Wigan Warriors’ recent exit from the Betfred Challenge Cup has left fans and players alike reflecting on a season that promised so much but delivered a painful setback. In their fourth-round match against Hull FC, the Warriors led 22-6 at halftime but failed to score in the second half, ultimately losing 26-22. Head coach Matt Peet expressed his disappointment, stating, “Obviously we’re very disappointed, everyone’s hurt. We’re hurt for the fans, the Cup means a lot to us and to not be in it at any time, it’s disappointing.”

Amidst this disappointment, a new talent has emerged, offering a beacon of hope for the Warriors’ future. Towering forward Nsemba was a sensation in 2024 and was rewarded with a long-term contract at the end of it. He has been given the No. 11 jersey for 2025 and will again link up with captain Farrell in what is a formidable back-row pairing.

The Warriors’ depth has been further bolstered by the arrival of George Hirst from Oldham, adding to the team’s strength and versatility.  However, recent departures have also impacted the squad’s dynamics. Harvie Hill, a promising forward who made three appearances this season, has signed a multi-year deal with Hull FC, taking fans and management by surprise.

Looking ahead, the Warriors are focused on bouncing back from their Challenge Cup exit. The emergence of young talents like Nsemba provides optimism for the remainder of the season. The team’s resilience and ability to adapt to roster changes will be crucial as they strive to reclaim their position at the top of the league.
