Bruins coach replies to question about potential roster changes

After his team’s second straight flat performance in their 6-2 loss to the Lightning, Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco was asked if there was any consideration made to making roster moves.

“We’ll figure all that stuff out,” he said. “We’re looking at players now. That may be something we do.”

Ultimately that decision would likely come more from general manager Don Sweeney and it might be more philosophical than practical:

Do the Bruins want young players building confidence and potentially thriving in the AHL or working their way through growing pains in the NHL?

The Bruins are hoping Matt Poitras, Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov and Fraser Minten will be regulars in the future. Poitras, and to a lesser extent Merkulov, have struggled to produce their stints in the NHL. Would calling them up to a team that is struggling allow them to grow or put them in an environment that isn’t conducive to development?

Tyler Pitlick, whose contract was just converted to an NHL two-way deal could be called up. But he’s 33 and won’t be a long-term solution.

Mike Callahan, Riley Tufte, Jeffrey Viel and Oliver Wahlstrom have all been up at points, but none of the four has produced enough to seem like a game-changer.
