In a recent interview, Tennessee Volunteers outside linebackers coach Levorn Harbin shared the story behind his unique nickname, “Chop,” and why he ultimately decided to join the University of Tennessee (UT) coaching staff.
The Origins of the “Chop” Nickname
Coach Harbin, known for his fierce and relentless coaching style, explained that the nickname “Chop” came from his playing days. “It was all about the mindset I brought to the field,” Harbin said. “I wasn’t a big guy, so I had to be physical. I used to chop at offensive linemen’s hands, their legs, their everything to get to the quarterback. It was all about relentless effort and power, and that mentality stuck with me.”
Harbin noted that the nickname stuck with him over time and became a symbol of his tough, no-nonsense approach to both playing and coaching football.
Why Harbin Chose to Join UT
After a successful stint at other programs, Harbin found himself drawn to Tennessee for several reasons. “It’s about the opportunity to be part of something bigger,” Harbin explained. “Tennessee has a rich football tradition, and I wanted to contribute to that. The talent in this program is undeniable, and I’m excited to help these young men reach their full potential.”
Harbin emphasized that the commitment to player development and the culture surrounding the UT football program were key factors in his decision to join Coach Josh Heupel’s staff. “I wanted to come here because the coaches, the players, and the entire community are committed to winning and developing young men both on and off the field. That’s what drew me in.”
A Growing Legacy at UT
Under Harbin’s leadership, the outside linebackers at Tennessee have already shown tremendous potential. Harbin is known for his ability to develop players into elite pass rushers, and his work with the Vols’ outside linebacker corps has already begun to show signs of growth. He takes pride in teaching his players not just the X’s and O’s, but the mentality required to be successful at the highest level of college football.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Coach Harbin’s passion and expertise will undoubtedly continue to elevate the Tennessee Volunteers’ defense. His intensity and commitment to excellence, embodied by his “Chop” mentality, promise to help the Vols compete at an elite level in the SEC.
With Coach Harbin leading the way, Tennessee’s defense is poised for a bright future, and fans can expect to see an even more aggressive, disciplined, and relentless pass rush from the Volunteers this season.
