In a surprising move, the Los Angeles Dodgers have decided that outfielder James Outman will accompany the team to Japan for the season-opening Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs.
This decision, reported by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic via a post on X, comes despite Outman’s uncertain status on the active roster. He is, however, confirmed to be part of the 31-player traveling squad.
Outman’s inclusion is unexpected given his underwhelming performance during spring training. Over 11 games, he has managed just six hits in 28 at-bats, including a double, two triples, and a home run, while striking out 15 times.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has emphasized the importance of a proven track record over spring training statistics, but Outman’s struggles are hard to overlook.
Roberts commented on Outman’s performance, noting that while he initially appeared comfortable with a revamped swing, he has since been swinging and missing frequently.
I don’t know if he’s pressing. He just doesn’t look as comfortable,” Roberts said.
Outman’s career began promisingly in July 2022 when he homered in his first major league at-bat and went 6-for-13 in his next four games, securing the starting center field position the following year.
However, after finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting, he experienced a significant sophomore slump.
By mid-May, the Dodgers demoted him to Triple-A, where he watched Andy Pages surpass him on the depth chart.
Roberts reflected on Outman’s struggles, attributing them to the pressure young players face when performance dips. “When you start to scuffle, you just can’t stop that spiral, Roberts said.
This year, he’s in a healthy competition. He looks good physically, and he’s holding his own with the swing change.
As Outman seeks to reclaim his spot on the major league roster, he must capitalize on every opportunity moving forward.
The Dodgers’ decision to include him in the Japan trip suggests they still see potential in the young outfielder, but his performance will ultimately determine his future with the team.
