The Colts’ starting quarterback position will be available for competition next season, according to general manager Chris Ballard at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday.
Anthony Richardson will be one of the quarterbacks. The other will be a player that Indianapolis acquires this summer.
Ballard stated that the Colts will look at free agency, trade, and the NFL Draft to acquire a quarterback who can compete with Richardson.
“I think that’s good for the team,” Ballard said. “And I think it’ll be good for Anthony.”
Anthony Richardson stats
Anthony Richardson has appeared in 15 of a possible 34 games since the Colts picked him No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has completed 50.6% of his passes for 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, and he has 10 rushing touchdowns.
He played 11 games in the 2024 season, completing 47.7% of his passes for 8 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and he rushed for 6 TDs.
Why did Anthony Richardson tap out, bench himself?
In a Week 6 game against the Houston Texans, Richardson took himself out late in the third quarter because of fatigue. He returned to the game. “Tired, I ain’t gonna lie,” he said postgame of his decision.
He was benched in favor of Joe Flacco the next two weeks but returned against the New York Jets and had his best performance of the season — 20-of-30, 272 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, 2 rushing TDs in a 28-27 victory.
