Just In: Chicago Bears releasing veteran defensive end star

The Chicago Bears have released veteran defensive end DeMarcus Walker, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Walker has been a vital contributor along the defensive line over the last two seasons, starting all 17 games in 2024. He recorded 47 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and 16 quarterback hits. However, with new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen in place, Chicago is moving in a different direction.

Walker was set to face a $5.91 million wage cap in 2025. His release will free approximately $5.25 million in cap space before free agency. This comes following news that tight end Gerald Everett will be released, freeing about $5.5 million in cap space.

With Walker’s release, the Bears have a big need to fill at edge rusher opposite Montez Sweat. There will be plenty of options between free agency and the 2025 NFL draft to shore up a position that has been the defense’s weak link for the past few years.
