ANN ARBOR, Michigan The University of Michigan women’s track and field team will compete in two separate meets for the first time this season, traveling to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 14-15) and to Boston, Mass., for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University on Saturday (Feb. 15). Track events at Clemson will start at noon on Friday and 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and 9 a.m., respectively. Action at Boston University will kick off at 10:40 a.m.

Notes:

  • At the Michigan Invitational, Elizabeth Tapper set a new program shot put record for the fourth consecutive meet, recording a distance of 17.77 meters (58 feet, 3.75 inches) on her fifth attempt to win the event. This mark ranks ninth in the NCAA and third in the conference.

  • Three other Wolverines earned top-10 finishes in the shot put: Abigail Russell took fourth with a throw of 14.98 meters (49-01.75), Trinity Franklin finished fifth at 14.82 meters (48-07.50), and Clare McNamara placed seventh with 13.73 meters (45-00.50). Franklin and McNamara set season-best marks.

  • The shot put team is currently ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings.

  • Russell also achieved a personal best in the weight throw, securing fourth place with a mark of 19.13 meters (62-9.25), ranking her sixth on Michigan’s all-time performers list.

  • Gabriella Newman cleared a career-best 1.72 meters (5-7.75) in the high jump, while Maya Anderson was just 0.04 meters shy of her personal best in the long jump with a distance of 5.68 meters (18-7.75). Both won their respective events.

  • The sprinters added four top-10 times to the program performers list: Savannah Sutherland recorded the No. 2 time in the 60-meter dash at 7.34 seconds, just 0.01 seconds shy of tying the program record. Amare Harlan posted the No. 2 time in the 200-meter dash at 23.58 seconds, while Payton Smith moved to No. 4 in both the 200-meter dash (23.74) and 400-meter dash (53.20). Smith’s 400-meter time ranks seventh in the Big Ten.

  • In the mile run, five Wolverines achieved personal-best times and top-10 finishes: Mary Caroline Heinen won the race with a time of 4:52.32, Leah Hill took second at 4:52.47, Gabbie Michael finished fourth in 4:57.88, Natalie VanOtteren placed seventh at 5:04.82, and CC Jones rounded out the top-10 with a ninth-place finish in 5:13.37.
