Breaking news: Ex-Tennessee Volunteers QB surfaces as a possible contender for Kellen Moore’s Saints offensive coordinator role.
Moore played a key part in guiding the Philadelphia Eagles to victory in Super Bowl 59 against the Kansas City Chiefs, largely due to the team’s impressive No. 7 scoring offense and No. 8 overall offense. As a result, all attention is on Moore’s choice for who will manage the offense, though he may still decide to handle play-calling himself.
One possible candidate, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, is Eagles quarterback coach Doug Nussmeier. However, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin has mentioned another compelling option: Tee Martin, the former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback.
Martin has been the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens over the past two seasons, where he worked closely with Lamar Jackson. The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback also spent time on the Eagles’ roster in 2002. Benjamin highlighted Martin’s decade of college coaching experience, which could bring fresh perspectives to Jalen Hurts’ development within Nick Sirianni’s system.
After being drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round, Martin’s NFL playing career was short-lived. He shifted to coaching, starting as a passing game coordinator at Morehouse College, and then moved to other Power 5 schools like Kentucky and USC. He later returned to Tennessee as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. Martin is especially remembered for leading the Volunteers to their last national title in 1998, succeeding Peyton Manning and guiding Tennessee to a perfect 13-0 season.
Benjamin ranked Martin as the fourth-best option for Moore’s offensive coordinator, with the top five candidates also including No. 5 Josh McCown (Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach), No. 3 Jerrod Johnson (Houston Texans quarterbacks coach), No. 2 Marcus Brady (Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks coach), and No. 1 Kevin Patullo (Eagles pass game coordinator and associate head coach).
