The Boston Red Sox have made a few major acquisitions this winter.
The biggest acquisitions to this point are starting pitchers Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler. Both starters should step into the Red Sox’s rotation and make a big difference in 2025.
But the Red Sox likely won’t be done adding there. They’re expected to add more players, either through free agency or in a blockbuster trade. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently predicted the Red Sox would re-sign pitcher Nick Pivetta. Miller also cited Spotrac’s projection of a $60 million deal for the righty.
“The $29 million AAV could still be in play, but 3/$75 million is sounding far more likely than 6/$174 million. The ‘where’ remains the bigger unknown, though,” Miller wrote. “Alonso re-signing with the Mets has always felt like the likeliest outcome, even after they signed Jesse Winker and seemed to be moving on sans Polar Bear.
And until he actually lands somewhere else-or at least until the Mets actually add a 1B or 3B this offseason-it’s still going to feel that way.” A lot of the Red Sox faithful wouldn’t be too happy with this decision.
Pivetta was solid with the Red Sox, but his 2024 season was quite a roller-coaster ride. If the Red Sox do bring him back, he would join a loaded starting rotation in Boston.
The righty provides a much higher floor than Buehler, but if Buehler can put the pieces back together, he’s going to be a much better pitcher than Pivetta. Still, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to re-sign him if it’s on an affordable deal.
