The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to rehire Gerald Alexander, who previously worked as the assistant defensive backs coach for the team during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
This news was initially reported by Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network and later confirmed by sources to PennLive.
Alexander will take charge of the defensive backs group, a role that was managed by secondary coach Grady Brown over the past four seasons. It remains uncertain whether Brown or assistant defensive backs coach Anthony Midget will continue with the team.
Earlier this offseason, Brown was considered for the defensive coordinator position with the Atlanta Falcons but was not selected for the role.
Alexander is a rapidly advancing coach who most recently served as the safeties coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Following the dismissal of Antonio Pierce and the hiring of Pete Carroll, Alexander was not kept on the Raiders’ staff, but he is seen as a valuable addition to the Steelers.
Prior to his time with the Raiders, Alexander was the defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2020 to 2021.
He began his coaching career in college football, where he specialized in coaching defensive backs, notably at the University of California from 2017 to 2019. During his tenure there, he helped develop three players who went on to join the NFL.
Alexander also has a background as an NFL player, having spent six years in the league. He was selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions from Boise State.
Throughout his career, he played for several teams including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets.
