Ohio State football has officially named its new offensive line coach, and the appointment appears to be a stellar choice. Tyler Bowen, who served as the offensive coordinator for the Virginia Tech Hokies over the past three seasons, will now take on a positional coaching role with the Buckeyes.
Bowen boasts an impressive background, including his recent stint at Virginia Tech and a role as tight ends coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 under former Ohio State icon Urban Meyer. Prior to that, the Maryland alumnus spent three years with the Penn State Nittany Lions from 2018 to 2020, including a period as co-offensive coordinator.
Beyond his duties as offensive line coach, Bowen will also assume the role of run game coordinator for Ohio State—a fitting assignment given the strength of Virginia Tech’s running game last season. He has garnered significant acclaim for his recruiting efforts, playing a key role in securing commitments from standout players like first-round offensive tackle Olu Fashanu and All-American tight end Tyler Warren, among others.
Bowen’s coaching experience within the Big Ten includes a 2017 stint as offensive line coach at his alma mater, the University of Maryland. He also served as offensive coordinator at Fordham from 2015 to 2016. At just 35 years old, his extensive track record is a major asset for the Buckeyes and will be invaluable in supporting the likely promotion of Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator. Hartline, currently the receivers coach, is expected to step up following Chip Kelly’s departure to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
While former offensive line coach Justin Frye earned immense respect during Ohio State’s playoff run, he has moved on to a new opportunity with the Arizona Cardinals. Bowen appears to be a strong successor. Frye faced criticism this season, particularly regarding his recruiting efforts (a point some may dispute), but Bowen’s reputation as a skilled recruiter could bring an upgrade in that area.
Some may question why Bowen would leave an ACC offensive coordinator position for a seemingly lesser title at Ohio State. However, Virginia Tech’s offensive struggles and the resulting pressure on Bowen may have influenced his decision to seek a fresh start with reduced responsibilities.
