A transfer safety from Georgia named Justyn Rhett came to Lincoln for a weekend visit and didn’t depart without making a pledge to the Huskers public on Saturday night.

Rhett played two games for Georgia in 2024 and recorded a few tackles in a loaded Bulldogs secondary. During the 2023 season, he played in two games but was redshirted. Fran Brown, the current head coach of Syracuse and Matt Rhule’s assistant, was his position coach at Georgia that season.

Rhett’s new curriculum will be his for three years.Georgia worked him as a safety this past season, and he has a 6-1, 200-pound build.

He came from the prestigious Bishop Gorman program in Las Vegas and was a highly regarded recruit. He received a three-star rating from 247Sports. In the 247Sports composite, he was rated as a four-star talent and came in at number 374 overall. He had committed to Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame before joining Georgia.

assisted Bishop Gorman in winning the NIAA Class 5A state championship and finishing 13-1 as a senior in high school.

“This player has all the physical attributes that schools are looking for in a backend player who could end up playing either corner or safety,” according to Rhett’s post-high school evaluation on 247Sports. Early in his career, he can offer depth and contribute on special teams. He has a chance to see an NFL career after becoming a strong (conference) starter with position versatility that will be useful in the secondary.

It is worth mentioning that MJ Sherman is now a success story for the Huskers. After playing a few defensive snaps at Georgia, Sherman came to Lincoln two years ago and quickly established himself as a starter for Nebraska as the Huskers continued their ascent.

Following the bowl game, DeShon Singleton and Isaac Gifford, two veterans at the safety/rover positions, will leave NU. Also out of the secondary going forward is cornerback Tommi Hill. Cornerback Ceyair Wright and versatile defensive backs Malcolm Hartzog and Marques Buford are among the key returnees.

New secondary coach Addison Williams was formally revealed a few days ago to guide that group into the bowl and beyond, and a healthy bunch of younger players are currently vying to join that mix during bowl practices.

Donovan Jones, Caleb Benning, and other younger players have impressed Ceyair Wright with their preparation for the Pinstripe Bowl game against Boston College on December 28. Wright said, “I’m excited to see how everybody goes out in the bowl game and plays.”

Additionally, it now looks like a former Georgia Bulldog will compete in January.

With the announcement, Nebraska currently has eight known additions from the portal.

Due to his dedication, Rhett is seated among defensive linemen Jaylen George, Williams Nwaneri, Gabe Moore, punter Jack McCallister, long snapper Kevin Gallic, quarterback Marcos Davila, and wide receiver Nyziah Hunter.
