Breaking: 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was blamed by head coach Kyle Shanahan for the team’s defeat to the Packers. Because…
On Thursday, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy underwent a second MRI on his injured throwing shoulder, as reported by FOX’s Jay Glazer. The results of this MRI showed no new structural damage, confirming what the first MRI had revealed: a shoulder strain.
Glazer explained, “Purdy injured his shoulder last week against Seattle. He had an MRI on Monday, which showed a strain. He practiced on Tuesday and Wednesday and seemed to be on track for recovery. But when he tried to throw on Thursday, his shoulder locked up. So, the team did another MRI, but it showed no further issues. Now, they’re left uncertain about when he’ll be able to return. They’re focusing on rehab and are hopeful he could play next week, but they don’t have a clear timeline yet.”
After Purdy pulled himself out of Thursday’s practice, 49ers general manager John Lynch spoke on KNBR in San Francisco, stating that the lighter practice was planned from the start for Purdy. However, in retrospect, it seems that wasn’t the case.
It appears the 49ers are waiting for Purdy to indicate when he’s ready to play. The team has cleared him, and if Purdy chose to receive a pain injection and play through the injury, the 49ers likely would have allowed it. But ultimately, the decision is in Purdy’s hands.
If the 49ers lose their upcoming game against the Packers, their playoff chances will be significantly diminished. In that case, it may be wise for the team to shut down Purdy for the remainder of the season, as bringing him back may not be enough to turn things around.
