SAD NEWS: Penrith Panthers head coach just announced today that Nathan Cleary is the…

Nathan Cleary battled through the pain barrier to help deliver Penrith their fourth successive premiership in 2024 as the Panthers dynasty showed no signs of crumbling any time soon.

The halfback managed to make just 13 appearances for his club during an injury-plagued campaign, yet when he did make it onto the field he made it count with a number of game-winning displays that will live long in the memory.

Cleary overcame a troublesome hamstring issue earlier in the season, only to then suffer a shoulder injury which eventually resulted in him missing the Pacific Championships as he was booked in for surgery.

Cleary picked up his shoulder injury in the closing stages of Penrith’s Round 24 clash against Melbourne.

The No.7 was involved in an awkward tackle with Josh King while hitting the ball up through the middle of the field and immediately clutched at the sore area when he battled back to his feet.

Cleary exited from the field with 14 minutes still remaining on the clock, in a match which the Panthers went on to lose 24-22.

The playmaker did not return to action for a month before he laced up the boots against the Roosters in a qualifying final.

He showed no signs of rust though as he registered two try assists during the demolition job on the Chooks.

The statement performance against Trent Robinson’s side was a sign of things to come as Cleary continued in the same vein for the rest of the finals series as the Panthers knocked off Cronulla and then the Storm to claim the title.

“I said to mum that I’ve got to play three games, and that’d be it,” Cleary revealed in the afterglow of the 14-6 win in the decider.

“I’m not going to go into full details (of what I’ve been through), but it’s been a frustrating year.”

After jetting to England to be with his partner, Matildas star Mary Fowler, Cleary has since returned Down Under for surgery on his shoulder.

The operation was booked in for early November, four weeks after Penrith’s premiership triumph.
