Zharnel Hughes, the fastest man in Britain, has warned his track opponents that in 2025 he plans to shatter records in the 60-meter sprint as well as go significantly quicker in the 100- and 200-meter sprints.
Hughes is coming off a terrible 2024 season in which injuries derailed his campaign and resulted in a subpar performance at the Olympics in Paris, 2024. Despite this, he was a member of Team GB that won bronze in the 4x100m relay. Hughes was unable to get past the semi-final in the 100m.
Yes, my standards are really high. My goal is to run quickly. Watch what transpires. In order to beat Dwain Chambers’ record of 6.42 seconds for the 60 metres, which has held for more than 15 years, Hughes told PA, “My coach and I will have to sit down and look at the schedule, especially the Diamond League schedule.
Kishane Thompson: The silver medallist in the Olympic 100 metres aims to manage his newfound fortune
“I told my coach that I wanted to try some 60-meter races, so we’ll probably be hitting a few more of those races. I think I can beat the British record there as well. I want to pay close attention to the details and make sure I’m honing the necessary parts.
“I’m considering attacking the first 60 metres and doing that right to set myself up beautifully for the final 40 metres of the 100-meter race.”
“It won’t be the World Indoor Championships, for sure, but the Diamond League races and a few 60-meter races to make me fresh.”
Noah Lyles discusses how his goal to “transform” track and field has been greatly influenced by his family.
Hughes hopes to go as low as 9.7 or 9.6 to beat some of the quickest times set by his opponents this year, and he feels that running quicker in the 60-meter will be essential to cutting his time in the 100- and maybe even 200-meter events.
The world record time is 9.77, held by Kishane Thompson of Jamaica, followed by Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya (9.79) and American Noah Lyles (9.79). Hughes is aiming to beat these times in 2025 as he prepares for the World Championships.
“I’m looking at low or mid 9.7s, but I can’t say exactly when.” Who knows whether I can get a 9.6 out of my body? That would be really unusual. However, I hold myself to a high standard and I have much more to offer. In order to prevent accidents, I’m putting a lot of effort into strengthening my body,” stated Hughes, whose greatest score to yet is 9.83 from June 2023.
Elaine Thompson-Herah responds, expressing gratitude for the first time since splitting from Reynaldo Walcott.
Hughes finished fourth in the 200-meter event at the 2023 World Championships, but he still prefers the 100-meter event, where he set a record in July of last year with a time of 19.73 seconds.
I’m still working to gain a little more knowledge about the 100m. More has to be adjusted, particularly in the initial metres. I’m trying to really concentrate on that because it’s one of my weaker areas,” he continued.
I have one of the fastest top speeds in the world. I will always catch up to you in the final stages of the race.
