Turn 1 on Lap 20 saw Larson, the top-seeded driver going into the second round of the playoffs, scrape the outside wall as his right rear tyre went flat. As the caution flag flew, he was allowed to take his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet down pit road so his team could assess the damage.
Pit road was used by the field to change tires and refuel during the yellow flag. Restarting from the pole position, Christopher Bell held the lead. Among the lead lap cars, Larson restarted last but managed to stay on the lead lap.

Ty Dillon, starting in position 32, and Harrison Burton, starting in position 28, made contact and sent both cars spinning. The collision also claimed the lives of Josh Berry and Jimmy Johnson. Chase Elliott was forced to ride directly up against the outside wall during the collision, but Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet escaped unharmed.
