That player is Yetur Gross-Matos, an edge rusher. He made sporadic practice appearances with the 49ers. He hadn’t practiced with the squad since the week of the preseason finale until today. After suffering a knee injury in the preseason finale, Gross-Matos has been recovering.
For the 49ers, having him back is fantastic news. There is never an excessive amount of depth on the defensive line. The 49ers will have a stronger pass rush against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, with Gross-Matos potentially making a comeback.
When the 49ers played the New York Jets in Week 1, that component of their game wasn’t deadly enough. Though there was more to gain from them, it was undoubtedly meaningful. To put it mildly, it wasn’t their best effort, but that’s okay because they have Week 2 against the Vikings to improve.
Certainly, the probability should rise with the return of Gross-Matos. The 49ers were excited about him as a player ever since they signed him as free agency. Not just Gross-Matos went back to practice though. Dee Winters, a linebacker in his second year, has also returned from injury.
Winters missed Week 1 due to an ankle issue that he has been struggling with. He practiced on a restricted basis Thursday, just like Gross-Matos. Winters will be able to contribute a unique team influence and additional defensive cushion in case of injuries or rotational stretches.
Last but not least, 49ers standout running back Christian McCaffrey was on the pitch once more. He was also a finite actor. It’s difficult to predict if he will make the payment. The 49ers seem to be pressuring him into playing in this game. The best course of action is to hold him out so he can continue to relax.
Which 49ers players will be active against the Vikings will be made clear by the injury report from their most recent practice on Friday.
