Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga Discuss the Intense Transformation and Unique Musical Elements in Joker: Folie à Deux” at Venice Film Festival

Joker: Folie à Deux,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, debuted at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday.

The actors discussed the movie and how they played Harley Quinn and the Joker in the musical follow-up.

Thinking back on his second stint as Arthur Fleck, nicknamed the Joker, Phoenix talked about how this time around, weight loss was different.

“I won’t go into the diet’s specifics, but because we had a lot of dancing rehearsal this time—something I didn’t have last time—it felt a little more complicated.”

Phoenix said, “Even though I performed it in a “safe” manner, I should probably not do this again because I’m now 49. I think that’s it for me.

Gaga said, “We turned into our characters over a period of time, and we continued to zero in [on] every kind of detail,” in response to his observation that she had “shed a lot of weight” for the movie.

She continued, “But I would say that practicing the waltz that is in the film was very, really wonderful,” in reference to the dancing sessions. We spent several months practicing. It’s fascinating. The dance, which breaks down, is a manifestation of their peculiar love for one another. Phoenix performed admirably on set. When he was extremely hungry, we gave him blueberries.”

This time, Joaquin claimed, he didn’t want to discuss his weight loss too much.

“I realise I was partially to blame for talking about it so much the last time around, but it’s hard to achieve, so you become obsessed with trying to reach a certain weight,” he said. “So you can’t help but talk about it, and then it just sounds like an actor talking on and on about how much weight they lost.”

At the conclusion of that run, the Oscar winner expressed, “You just do what you’re f**king meant to do, so I was so sick of myself and irritated at myself for making such a fuss out of it… I decided this time that I would not do that.

With regard to the singing, Joaquin remarked, “At first, she said, ‘Oh, we’re going to sing live,’ and I answered, ‘No, we’re not… If you like, you can perform live. In the end, we succeeded, and there truly was no other option. Not only did we perform our songs live, but we also recorded everything live. We had a pianist on staff.

“We tackled music in this film in a really special and highly subtle way,” Gaga continued. In many aspects, I wouldn’t claim that this is genuinely a musical. It is significantly dissimilar. Because the scenario and the speech alone were insufficient, the characters are given a means of expressing themselves through the use of music.

Regarding the singing, the celebrity stated, “We put a lot of effort into how we sang. It was a lot for me to kind of relearn technique, forget about breathing, and let the music come out of the character entirely.

I suppose I started making music when I was really tiny because I simply had something to say and I was trying to find out how to accomplish that,” Gaga said, sharing her love of both music and movies. The stories you get to tell and the ways you can express things to the world that ideally will help people feel good about life and allow them a minute to escape into another world and fall into somebody else’s story are some of the reasons I love music and films so much.

Phoenix reappears in the movie as Arthur Fleck, who killed Murray Franklin on live television and is now institutionalised at Arkham Asylum.

He meets and falls in love with Gaga’s Harleen Quinzel, alias Harley Quinn, while he waits for his trial and battles with his identity.

The sequel, which also stars Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Harry Lawtey, and Zazie Beetz, was directed by Todd Phillips, the man behind “The Joker.”

On October 4, “Joker: Folie à Deux” opens in theatres.
