Just now, Louisville schools are taking additional measures to protect athletes from the deadly heat…
Football practice at Valley High School was moved inside the gym on Tuesday, which was a necessary compromise to ensure the safety of the players and coaches. Jefferson County Public Schools’ athletic director, Dr. April Brooks, stated on Sunday that the district has suggested modifications to the practices.

When I saw this weekend that we were going to have a big heat wave coming in this week, it was necessary for us to make sure that we took some precautions for all of our student-athletes,” Brooks said on Tuesday.
Brooks keeps an eye on the weather outdoors with a heat stress tracker. In practice, they’ll start adding additional breaks if the temperature rises above 95 degrees. They’ll also make sure the competitors have access to plenty of water, cooling towels and shade.
JCPS athletic trainer Ally Schum stated that it’s critical to know and keep an eye on the student-athletes in addition to keeping an eye on the temperature.
“I am looking for extreme fatigue, which can sometimes be hard to see because everybody thinks they’re tired all of the time,” Schum stated. “I’m looking for confusion, lightheadedness and the gradual onset of a headache.”
Medical professionals advise drinking plenty of water and limiting your time spent in the sun. Whenever feasible, go for electrolyte-containing sports drinks or simple water. When you can, remain indoors with air conditioning and wear light clothing.
