ALMOST: The Louisville police officer who detained Scottie Scheffler is currently being charged with robbing him.
Pro golfer Scottie Scheffler was being arrested, and a Louisville police officer who was reprimanded for not turning on his body camera at that time has been accused of stealing $4,000 from a criminal suspect.
An arrest citation claims that Officer Javar Downs, 39, stole the money from a detainee who was being taken to jail. Approximately $10,000 was found in an envelope when the suspect was apprehended on Friday during a traffic check. Downs is suspected of stealing $4,000 and turning the remaining amount into evidence.
According to the arrest report, an examination of the camera showed Downs taking the money.
Downs was taken into custody on Friday am. According to WAVE-3 TV, interim Police Chief Paul Humphrey of Louisville Police has put Downs on emergency suspension and is in the process of firing him from the department.
Three officers, including Downs, received penalties for failing to activate their body cameras when they arrested Scheffler on May 17 outside the PGA Championship-hosting Louisville golf club. Scheffler’s charges were eventually withdrawn.
