The Iredell Free News reports that former NASCAR champion Kurt Busch was detained earlier this week on suspicion of DWI. In addition, he is accused of speeding and driving with recklessness and carelessness.
Busch was stopped on Monday at around 11:30 p.m. in Iredell County, North Carolina, after his vehicle was detected travelling at 63 mph in a 45 mph zone. According to court documents obtained by the Iredell Free News, a constable reported that Busch had “red glassy eyes” and a “strong odour of alcohol emanating from his breaths.” He acknowledged drinking before driving as well.
With a blood-alcohol content of 0.17, Busch exceeded the permissible limit of 0.08. After being brought to the Iredell County Detention Centre, he was released early on Tuesday morning. The next court date is September 19.
Following the announcement of his arrest, Busch made a statement. He apologised to his fans, friends, and family and stated he was working with the authorities on the next course of action.
Busch said, “I apologise to my family, my racing family, and my fans. I’m really disappointed in myself.” “I’ll cooperate with law enforcement to address the issue and with the county to create a more secure environment going forward.”
After a stellar career, Busch announced his retirement from NASCAR in August 2023. With 34 races won, he and his brother Kyle became the most successful siblings in NASCAR history. In 2000, Busch was also named Rookie of the Year.
Busch ascended to the summit in 2004. A run of four straight wins helped him win the Nextel Cup Series, and he made history by becoming only the second driver to win both races in New Hampshire in one season. One of the greatest seasons in NASCAR history, it was only a small portion of Busch’s illustrious career, which also featured a 2017 Daytona 500 victory.
His career was cut short at Pocono in 2022 as a result of injuries. Busch became emotional when the honours started rolling in at the NASCAR Awards in December, the same month he announced his retirement.
Even though he is retired, Busch remains connected to 23XI Racing. He has also travelled the globe, attending Chicago Cubs games, Isle of Man races, and Formula One events. He sang the Seventh Inning Stretch at Wrigley Field earlier this year, before the Chicago Street Race.
