Orioles and Corbin Burnes want to split their important AL series with the Guardians.
In order to split this crucial four-game series, the Baltimore Orioles need to defeat the Cleveland Guardians. And in Corbin Burnes’ post-All-Star Game starts, the Orioles have an opportunity to maintain their perfect record while he attempts to tie his career high in wins on Sunday afternoon against Cleveland.
Losing the first two games of this series to the AL-leading Guardians, Baltimore, which is tied with the New York Yankees atop the American League East, managed just nine hits despite being outscored 18-7. But in the 7-4 victory on Saturday, the Orioles exploded for 15 hits, ending Cleveland’s five-game winning streak.
The Orioles, 9-13 since July 9, had a four-run eighth inning led by Adley Rutschman’s pinch-hit, two-run triple; Gunnar Henderson had three hits and an RBI; and Jackson Holliday had two hits and an RBI. “Everybody’s got a buy-in mentally,” Henderson, 7-for-17 in his past four games, told Fox Sports.
“That’s what we’re gonna need down the stretch and in the playoffs, as well.” The Orioles haven’t had any trouble scoring runs during Burnes’ three starts since he started the American League All-Star Game on July 16; they have won all three of those games and Burnes (11-4, 2.47 ERA) has been his usual solid self while going 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his last three starts.
