RHP Yimi Garcia is acquired by the Seattle Mariners from the Blue Jays.
On Friday afternoon, the Seattle Mariners acquired right-handed pitcher Yimi Garcia from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league catcher Jacob Sharp and outfielder Jonatan Clase.
The Mariners are trying to mend their roster in preparation for a postseason run, and this move follows Thursday night’s addition of outfielder Randy Arozarena from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander stated, “Yimi has been one of the best relievers in the American League this year—dominating the strike zone, missing bats, and pitching in high leverage.” “He has big-game experience and we’re excited to add him to our bullpen.”
Prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline, Garcia, 33, was among the best relievers on the market. In 29 games this season, Garcia has made appearances for Toronto, recording a 3-0 record, a 2.70 ERA, eight walks (three intentional), and forty-two strikeouts in thirty innings pitched. This season, Garcia’s opponents are only hitting.154 against him, with a.526 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Garcia’s arrival strengthens a bullpen that is currently struggling with some injury issues. With a knee injury, Gregory Santos missed Wednesday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. Regarding Santos’ future prognosis, no information has been provided thus far.
