Carlos Estévez, closer for the Los Angeles Angels, was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, giving them a much-needed addition to their bullpen. After Seranthony Domínguez left in a package trade to the Orioles, he steps in.
It turned out that the rumors that the Phillies were searching for additional bullpen support prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline were accurate.
Tanner Banks, a left-handed reliever for the Chicago White Sox, was someone they waited to trade for until just before the deadline. They traded left-hander Gregory Soto to the Baltimore Orioles in a later deal.
Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations for the Phillies, and the team were viewed as buyers from the beginning of the season since they knew they needed to take advantage of their quick start. It was becoming clear that new players were needed to give the team a boost after their lackluster performance for more than a month.
It’s not a given that Estévez will close games coming forward, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Rob Thomson, the manager, has a knack for reading players and putting his trust in guys when they have leverage. Estévez might be handled similarly.
