Yankees General Manager replies to article regarding unsuccessful Jack Flaherty transaction
On Wednesday, general manager of the New York Yankees Brian Cashman attempted to refute rumors that the team had shelved a deal for pitcher Jack Flaherty due to health issues.
Cashman stated on Wednesday that the reason Flaherty’s deal with the Detroit Tigers fell through was merely that the two organizations were unable to come to an agreement. He refuted claims that the absence of a transaction was related to worries about Flaherty’s back.
The Yankees pulled out of a deal including Flaherty due to worries about the pitcher’s reported medical issues, according to reports that surfaced on Tuesday between the Tigers and the team.
In the end, Flaherty was traded by the Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for two prospects.
Cashman’s remarks definitely seem to have some damage control in them. When a deal collapses due to illness, it reflects poorly on all parties. Furthermore, Cashman won’t likely want to deal with inquiries about why the Dodgers had confidence in Flaherty while the Yankees did not, assuming Flaherty stays healthy and pitches effectively for the Dodgers.
This season, Flaherty has experienced a recurrence of some back problems. Nevertheless, he’s remained healthy enough to pitch in 18 starts, with a 2.95 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 106.2 innings.
