Former hero of the World Series making a pitching comeback in MLB
In a completely new role, a former star of the World Series is attempting a comeback in MLB.
According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Brett Phillips, who wrote a memorable scene during the 2020 World Series, has inked a minor league contract with the New York Yankees. Former utility outfielder Phillips is trying to make a name for himself as a pitcher.
Although Phillips is a career.187 hitter and has failed to maintain an MLB-level employment in recent years, he did play in the Major League Baseball as recently as 2023. That influenced his decision to switch to pitching, though it’s safe to say he’s always been rather excited about the position.
But Phillips’s return is no laughing matter. He was reaching 97 mph on the radar gun when he made his debut at the NBC World Series, a showcase for collegiate and semi-pro athletes. Although the order appeared to require some refinement, he also included a feasible breaking ball.
The game-winning walk-off hit that Phillips produced for the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 4 of the 2020 World Series stands as the most memorable moment of his career. The 30-year-old could yet surpass that if he can truly return to success as a pitcher.
