Sporting Lisbon gives Coventry City a windfall of £2.5 million as part of the sale of Viktor Gyokeres.
Sporting Clube de Portugal has given Coventry City €3 million (£2.5 million) to lessen the amount of its sell-on clause for Viktor Gyokeres.
A price has reportedly been paid to Sporting so they would receive a larger portion of any future sales of the striker, according to Portuguese source Record.
Gyokeres signed a contract worth an estimated £16.8 million with Lisbon last summer, with a 15% sell-on clause attached.
This implied that the Sky Blues would be eligible to receive 15% of any subsequent sum that Sporting agreed to in exchange for the striker.
The Swede’s first season with his new club was incredibly successful, sparking questions about his future in Portugal.
The £2.5 million sum that Coventry received from Sporting has resulted in a 10% reduction in the sell-on clause.
Thanks to an arrangement with the Championship team, Sporting was able to pay €2 (£1.7) million up front, plus an additional €1 million (£840,000) due to a performance-based condition.
Earlier this year, Gyokeres was linked to a move away from Sporting, with reports indicating that Arsenal and Chelsea were keen.
Since then, though, rumors have surfaced suggesting that he will probably stay in Lisbon past the summer transfer window—a new deal may even be discussed in light of his strong play.
The striker, who scored 29 league goals in his debut season with the team (all numbers via Fbref), has apparently been offered a new deal.
