Seeking offense, the Mariners reportedly pushed for an unexpected deal with the Cubs.
Following the revelation of the Cubs-Rays trade return for Isaac Paredes, it became clear that the Mariners continued to press for corner infield assistance.
Even after acquiring Randy Arozarena, the Mariners were reportedly still in the market for bats before of the 2024 Trade Deadline. We only knew that the Mariners were still actively and vehemently attempting to bolster their offense; we had no idea who, what, or even which position they were seeking for.
Isaac Paredes was supposedly one of those targets. He was a major league player at a position where the Mariners were desperate, and rumors circulated that they were discussing him.
It did seem improbable that they would make a second deal for a Rays player, given that they had already acquired Arozarena from the Rays.
Paredes was then dealt to the Cubs. Usually, this would be the end of the speculation and rumors. Rather, the Mariners started a rumor as a result of the trade.
The Mariners are continuing in need of an infield cornerback.
Although it is surprising, I won’t say that the Mariners’ attempt to acquire Christopher Morel from the Cubs is stunning. Like Arozarena, I seem to recall hearing that he was considered at one point, but there were no fresh rumors or leaks around him.
