Milwaukee Brewers Go $1 Million Above Slot Value to Secure High Upside 2024 MLB Draft Selection
An intriguing tactic was used by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. At positions 17 and 34, they selected Blake Burke and Braylon Payne, who both signed for less than the expected slot value. Then, hoping to entice two high upside prep guns from the New Jersey area away from their college commitments, they selected them at picks 57th and 67th overall.
The second-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers has officially inked a $1 million deal beyond slot value with the team.
Bryce Meccage, a right-handed pitcher selected in the second round, has agreed to a $2.5 million contract with the Brewers. This pick’s slot worth was $1,562,100. When Braylon Payne signed for less than slot value, Milwaukee saved about $1.1 million, so all of those savings were used to wrest Meccage away from the University of Virginia.
Can Chris Levonas be signed by the Milwaukee Brewers?
Chris Levonas, a right-handed pitcher, was chosen with the tenth pick overall, after Bryce McCabe. He’s committed to Wake Forest for college. The Brewers will need to pay more than the $1,230,000 to take him away from his expected slot value of 67th overall. As previously noted, Milwaukee did save money when Blake Burke signed for about $500,000 less than his slot worth; it’s possible that Levonas will receive all of those savings back in order to sign him.
