CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians have released right-hander Spencer Howard, the right-hander acquired earlier this month from San Francisco in exchange for cash. Righty Peter Strzelecki has rejoined the team from Triple-A Columbus ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Padres at Progressive Field.
Howard, 27, made two appearances for Cleveland including one start. In five innings, he allowed eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He surrendered three home runs and posted a 9.00 ERA after joining the club July 11 from the Giants.
Strzelecki, 29, joined the Guardians at the end of spring training in a trade from Arizona for cash. He pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings across four outings across two separate stints with the Guardians in April and May, allowing five hits while striking out three. In 30 appearances for Columbus, Strzelecki posted a 4.18 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.
Manager Stephen Vogt said Strzelecki has thrown well every time he has had an opportunity at the major league level with Cleveland.
“With where we’re at with the bullpen, he can give us a couple innings of length if we need it,” Vogt said. “He can also pitch in leverage. He’s thrown well for us every time he’s been up here.”
