Prospect TJ Shook heads to New York in minor trade

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired left-hander Tyler Jay in a minor deal with the New York Mets, sending right-hander TJ Shook back to New York.

Jay, 30, was a first-round pick by the Twins in 2015 but didn’t make his MLB debut until this season with the Mets. In three MLB appearances with New York, he went 4 2⁄3 innings, striking out three and allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks.

He’s bounced around the minors for the last several years, finding success at Triple-A Syracuse this season with a 2.40 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 41 1⁄3 innings.

Jay was designated for assignment on July 17 and, with Milwaukee designating reliever Joel Kuhnel, the team had an open spot on the 40-man roster to add Jay. He’ll head to Triple-A Nashville for the time being.

On the other side of the deal, Shook will head to New York’s Double-A affiliate. Shook was undrafted out of South Carolina in 2020 and was signed by the Brewers after the draft.

In four seasons in Milwaukee’s organization, Shook is 23-17 with a 4.77 ERA and 373 strikeouts over 328 1⁄3 innings in 80 appearances (57 starts). He’s 5-7 with a 4.90 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 64 1⁄3 innings this season, with 17 appearances and 11 starts.
