Chicago Cubs sign third baseman Cam Smith for $5.07 million
Former Florida State star Cam Smith has officially signed his contract with the Chicago Cubs. According to Carlos Collazo of Baseball America, the Cubs inked the first-round draft pick to a deal worth ($5.07 million) on Saturday afternoon.
Smith joined Florida State in 2023 and made an immediate impact. In 51 games, Smith recorded a .258 batting average with 54 hits, eight doubles, five triples, and 12 home runs with 36 RBIs and 39 runs scored. He was second on the team in runs, hits and walks (21).
In 2024, Smith took a big step forward to become a top prospect. He led the Seminoles with a .387 batting average and only struck out 48 times in 269 at-bats. Smith also tallied 16 home runs with 57 RBIs and 82 runs scored.
Smith’s production helped Florida State reach the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 2019. He hit two home runs in back-to-back games against UCF in the NCAA regionals and went 5-for-9 against Uconn in the super regionals. In the College World Series, Smith hit a double in each of his first two games and scored run in a win against North Carolina.
“It’s a dream come true,” Smith told the 11Point7 podcast after playing in the Men’s College World Series. “I’ve always been a Florida State fan and just to know inside that I’m playing for Florida State baseball with this uniform on in Omaha, there’s nothing better.”
