Former Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus finds new team just before camp
According to multiple reports, and his agency, on Tuesday, former Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus has signed with the Houston Texans. They worked out two wide receivers on Tuesday, and Cephus was the one they chose to sign.
The Lions released Cephus after he was given an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy last year. After being reinstated this spring he signed with the Buffalo Bills on April 30, but they released him on May 16.
Cephus was drafted by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2020 draft out of the University of Wisconsin. He had 20 catches for 349 yards and two touchdowns over 13 games as a rookie in 2020. He looked somewhat promising early in the 2021 season, with 15 catches and two touchdowns over the first five games, but a shoulder/collarbone injury in Week 5 cost him the rest of that season.
Cephus played the first four games in 2022, then a foot injury in that fourth game cost him the rest of that season even after the Lions opened his window to return from IR. Then he course lost the entire 2023 season to the gambling suspension.
All told, Cephus has 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns over 22 NFL games.
