Tom Edwards had come all the way through the ranks at Stoke City to play in the Premier League and be named Stanley Matthews Footballer of the Year before he slipped down the pecking order
Tom Edwards is in line to make the first start of the next chapter of his career against Port Vale after signing for Salford City.
The 25-year-old right-back left Stoke City at the end of last month, having been on the club’s books since he was an eight year old still at primary school in Stafford. He had risen through to help the under-18s reach the FA Youth Cup semi-final, make his breakthrough in the Premier League and be named Stanley Matthews Footballer of the Year in 2019 before his star waned.
He hardly figured after signing a long-term contract in October 2019 and has since had loan spells at Fleetwood Town, New York Red Bulls, Barnsley and Huddersfield. The end of his bet365 Stadium terms prompted a new chapter and he has signed for League Two Salford as a free agent.
His manager will be Karl Robinson, who started his coaching career with Alsager Town, where Edwards’s brother Jack, a winger currently with Lichfield City, spent time as a player.
