These two have been well-documented and confirmed to several reporters via several sources.
We can’t assume that the situation is irreparable, especially if other teams, as reported, have been turning down deals because of McGroarty’s alleged position of wanting an NHL roster spot handed to him.
Fans will always be upset when players don’t want to play for their team. It’s understandable and unavoidable. It’s just the way it goes.
It’s also understandable that a player may want to find a better opportunity for himself, even if that includes forgoing conventional methods of making an NHL roster. College players have a unique loophole they can use. Not all of them use it. Most don’t. But it’s there and well within their right to exercise it.
