The Minnesota Vikings completed voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) a week ago last Thursday and have a month off until training camp begins. Rookies report to camp on July 21, and veterans report on July 23.
One of the more under-the-radar headlines surrounding the Vikings’ secondary is the number of safeties they will keep on their 53-man roster.
The Minnesota Vikings safety room is up for grabs
The Vikings entered their break with five safeties on their roster. Their starters include Harrison Smith and Camryn Bynum, and their backups include Jay Ward, their former 1st round pick, and Theo Jackson.
The Vikings had their undrafted second-year player switch positions.
NaJee Thompson converted from cornerback to safety this offseason, and the Vikings currently have six safeties on their roster. Thompson primarily played on special teams last season and recorded seven tackles and one fumble recovery in 195 special teams snaps as a rookie. Many people believe that he will make the 53-man roster.
This recent news puts their former 1st-round pick on the roster bubble.
